When Filippo Brunelleschi designed the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, no one in Florence believed it would be possible to build it without an internal wooden support framework, which at the time was considered essential for large domes.

Brunelleschi, on the other hand, devised an ingenious system of bricks arranged in a herringbone pattern and a mechanism of pulleys and winches to lift the materials. For years, he worked on his projects in secret, fearing that other architects would try to steal his ideas.

When the dome was completed in 1436, the city was astonished: one of the greatest structures of the Renaissance had been built without internal scaffolding, thanks to Brunelleschi's ingenuity and determination. Even today, the dome is considered a masterpiece of engineering and design.
